The shootings in College Station on Monday have left our community stunned and heartbroken. Several families were affected by the tragedy. Two local families with children lost their husband/father on Monday. Our community’s generosity and love for the Bachmann family has been beautiful. The other local family who lost a parent during Monday’s shooting is the Northcliffe family. Chris left behind a wife, Christy (a teacher in the Bryan School District) and two older children (a daughter who is a high school student, and a 20 year old son). Today I spoke to Linda Stearns, a family friend of the Northcliffes and the Treasurer of Brazos Progressives to ask how we could help and show our love to this grieving family. I know our community here at BCS Families is hurting for the Northcliffes and has expressed a strong interest in helping the family through this difficult time.
An account has been set up for the family at Brazos Valley Schools Credit Union (2298 Longmire Drive in College Station). In addition, an account has been set up to accept monetary donations at any BCS Branch of Prosperity Bank under the “Benefit of Chris Northcliffe Fund.” Community members are welcome to donate money to the Northcliffe family through either fund.
I’m in the process of contacting local grocery stores to see if they will match the dollar amounts of the gift certificates purchased for the Northcliffe family. For the next two weeks, this community of readers (and our community at large) can purchase gift certificates from our list of participating grocery stores. When you purchase your gift certificate for the Northcliffe family, the grocery store will match your donation dollar-for-dollar. The gift certificates you purchase for the Northcliffes will remain at the stores. I’ll pick up all of the gift certificates from local grocery stores in two weeks and deliver them to the church where the family attends. The family’s church will pass along the gift certificates to the Northcliffes.
I’ll be adding to the list of local grocery stores as I confirm their participation. Until August 29, the following grocery stores are matching the dollar amounts of gift certificates purchased for the Northcliffe family (for example – you purchase a $20 grocery store gift card for the family – the Northcliffes receives a $40 gift card from the store):
Kroger has generously agreed to match gift cards for the Northcliffe Family up to $5,000.
HEB has generously agreed to match gift cards for the Northcliffe Family up to $5,000.

Our hearts and prayers are with those who have been affected by Monday’s events. We’re thankful to the business owners in our town for their eager support of the families involved. Our community is grieving and desires to tangibly “do something” to express our sorrow and love to the Northcliffes and Bachmanns. We’re grateful that local businesses are helping us double our efforts and allowing our money to go further by matching our gifts to the families. I know I speak for many when I say how fortunate we are to live in Bryan-College Station where we see families truly supporting one another through dark, difficult times.

Does this apply for both families? If I bought gift certificates at one place for both families I’m assuming I just give the names and it would go to both?

Alicia,
Kroger is giving the money donated (and matched) to the Northcliffe family. Some restaurants are participating in both of the matching donations for each family. When you buy a gift card from one of the restaurants participating in both matching donations, simply tell them which family you’d like your donation to be given.

thank you! I will be doing this today!

I want to mention that Kroger is also helping the Bachmann family as well through private donations. They are supplying a large portion of the food after the funeral (and are helping in other ways). As far as the gift card matching, the money will ALL go to the Northcliffe family.

Kroger is only donating money and holding the gift cards if you buy a KROGER gift card – not a restaurant gift card that they sell in the store. If you want them to match your gift card purchase and give the card to the family, you have to buy a KROGER gift card.
